The reason The Herd keeps going down is because the server it runs on keeps running out of disk space. The database and log files are currently very verbose, saving info on every user who subscribes to every feed that the Herd knows about. So we can keep going and deleting files to free up disk space, but it seems like the only permanent solution will be to alter the logic so that not such a ridiculous amount of info is getting stored in the first place.

I just added a script that just need to be put on cron - it will compact all couchdb's databases (they will use 70-90% less space, afaik).

I put compact_db.py on sm-labs-elgg01 at /var/ubiquity-site/ubiqsite/compact_db.py , modified it to have the URL of the couchdb server, and wrote a cronjob to run it once per 24 hours.

compact_db.py itself is working, but it's not much help if the couchdb itself can't stay up for more than a few minutes at a time without crashing and needing to be restarted.
