Printing Usability

How do you take a bad situation, toil away for a year, and come up with a more usable (but not more humane) printing dialogue? Ask this guy.
That’s a bit mean, he had a really tough problem: 3 very unpredictable components and 70+ options. So his solution looks pretty and covers 90% of his user base. It fits his benchmarks for success and it is an improvement.
FLOSS has been making steady progress on their UI over the last few years, but there’s always the room to improve.
My idea essentially revolves around a 3D preview. An incremental search for a particular setting (all the rage these days) would be good. Printing is my day job, maybe I have some special insight or something. But, I don’t see references to even a card-sorting exercise. : (
